ROACHDALE SUMMERFEST

A Brief History

"Roachdale PRIDE grew out of a realization that the local Delta Theta Tau sorority might be able to accomplish more for the community of Roachdale, if they became initiators to get the community working together to help itself protect what it has, meet community needs, and improve itself both in appearance and perhaps economically.  A community meeting was organized to which representatives of the community were invited to discuss how we perceived Roachdale.  We listed our "Hurrahs"  those things we saw as good about ourselves.  Then our "Hurrumphs",  those things that made us unhappy or disappointed, and then our "Hmmmms"  those things that we might wish for for our community.  An intersting thing that could be observed from this exercise was that as a small town community, the majority felt that we had lost alot of our "small town comraderie."  Part of noting that loss was the
disapearance of the once renowned "SummerFest" that had drawn people from counties around to the best July 4th celebration in west central Indiana!  Well, now gee, that is a no brainer, why sit back and bemoan.  The initiators asked the VFW who were still putting on a fish fry and a car show on the 4th, if they would mind if a few community citizens tried to add something to their affair.  The first year a parade and some children's activities were added.  Both were incredibly well received.  The second year a village of supporters added a children's tractor pull and a pet parade to the previous year's activities. Learning that in today's world that insurance policies are a part of holding a community event, the village of supporters footed that bill!  Now, there is one reason why small towns no longer have the festivals that they once had!   With rain, both years and difficulty finding people to work with organizing  an event on July 4th with no
ability to stage fireworks, the people who had worked with bringing back SummerFest these past two years, determined to pick another date and go for one all out festival day. "
